Safety Tips For 5K Training Efforts!

By Dwight Hawkins

If you are preparing to run a 5K then there are some important safety tips that you need to know and follow in order to stay safe and avoid injury. The first is that hydration is incredibly important. Make sure that you drink fluids even while you are performing your training runs. This is especially true in warmer weather and on days when there is a lot of sunlight. Wear clothing that allows airflow and that wicks any moisture away from your skin. This will help you stay cooler and more comfortable, and prevent overheating and certain fungal infections from skin that stays warm and moist.

You should really get all your equipment and gear ready way in advance of the run. Ensure that all of them including your clothing are in tip top condition. This applies to your shoes as well. It would be best if you could use the exact same ones that you use for your training routines so that you will be used to them. It is very important that you get them fitted comfortably. Otherwise, you could suffer from blisters if they are too tight or you could often trip if they are too loose.

Dress in layers. As you warm up and start to sweat you can always remove the layers, but you will stay warm until your body kicks in and your temperature rises. During the warm summer months make sure that you choose terrain that offers periodic areas of shade so you can get out of the direct sunlight at times. This can help you avoid eat stroke or exposure to excessive sunlight.

Stretch out before you take off. Proper stretching will help warm up and lengthen the muscle fibers. This helps you avoid injury and will ensure better results. If you do not stretch out and these tissues start cold you could end up pulling or even tearing fibers. Any injury will set back your training efforts and could keep you from being ready when the big day arrives.

You might also want to avoid listening to any music via headphones during your run. This is because you will be less alert of your surroundings and this will be very dangerous. Before you cross any roads, slow down and check the surroundings first. There will be other potential hazards around you which you'll have to keep an eye out for as well such as a manhole under construction. Stay alert and you should do just fine.
