Simplified NFL Offensive Rankings And Stats

By Ruthie Calderon

Fantasy football depends on the offensiveness and the defense of the actual team in the league. To score the highest points each week, month or season, you must understand how NFL offensive rankings affect your tally. This will enable you balance a team between its ability to attack and how that will be countered by their opponents.

The score is a greater determinant above all other factors. High scoring teams always rank better compared to low scoring teams. A weak defense can only reduce the strength of a team when it is compared to another high scoring team. The two will be separated by goal difference. To stand a better chance, you should take the best scorer and the best defender.

Yard Per Play is an indication of the portion that each team claims in a game. Top ranked teams have a higher yard per play rating than low scorers. The factors that affect yard per play include first downs, number of points and number of wins. Teams that struggle with first downs have a poor winning record.

Do not be blinded by an impressive first down rating. The ratings do not determine possession and neither do they determine the number of victories. An example is where Cardinals started their season with 3-0 yet were ranked number twenty seven in 2012. This does not mean that they should be ignored. Combining them with Rush Attempts gives you a better indication of the quality of play.

When betting, consider the Yards Per Rush of your team of interest. This is a crucial indicator of the quality of play. This might however be misleading especially at the beginning of the season. Some teams have a poor run and are likely to be written off. Others have overturned the tables and recorded impressive performances. A poor run defense at a particular time does not mean that it is time to write-off the team.

The potential of any team can be determined by its passing attempts in one game and over a period of time. Offenders make the most passing attempts while defenders are reluctant. Beyond the passing attempts, consider the passing yard when determining gaming strength and potential. The possibility of winning with an offender is higher than when dealing with a defender.

Time of Possession indicates the number of times a team remained with the ball. For a team to score and win, it must retain the ball for the longest time possible. A longer period also indicates strength. In some cases, the other team may be better in defense and holding the ball. This is likely to offset an offensive team. A combination of both traits is desired.

Turnovers will make an average team great and an excellent team out of a good one. It indicates the number of offenses and how these offenses are used to their advantage. This may reflect strategy and individual skills by the players. Penalties aid in ranking teams based on which team takes the most penalties and whether these penalties are broken by the opponents or not. The factors will assist you in determining the team that is likely to win you more cash when betting.
