By Stacey Burt

Tai chi is known to be a very popular martial art for those who are health conscious because this type of exercise is known to be for the strengthening of the immune system. Aside from making the internal organs strong, this type of exercise also strengthens the muscles and the bones as well. So if one would want to learn tai chi, here is a short overview of what he will learn.

Now the very first part of this art would be all about the internal aspect of the martial art namely all about the health aspect. Now in Tai Chi, the key having a healthy body is in knowing how to breathe properly and in a way that one can be able to harness his inner energy or his chi. Now it is this chi that is inside of him that will make him healthier both on the inside and the outside.

Now there is actually a certain way for practitioners to breathe which is not like the way regular people would breathe. This type of breathing would require one to push in air into his stomach while inhaling and also pushing that air out of the stomach while exhaling. So if one would feel his abdomen moving up and down, he is doing it right.

Now one has to make this type of breathing his primary way of breathing because it is the correct way. When he has already gotten used to breathing like this, then he can already move on to the more physical part of the art. The first thing to do would be to learn about the basic stance.

The most basic stance that he will be assuming for most of the time would be the horse rider stance. The horse rider stance makes a practitioner stand in a sitting position similar to the position of riding a horse. In this stance, one can actually be able to get a lot of health benefits.

Now to do this pose, one has to first stand upright and spread his legs apart shoulder width with his hands relaxed. While he is standing, he should then inhale and then exhale while he is lowering himself and bending his legs. Now he should try to just assume that pose for a while and practice until his legs become so strong that he can stay in that position for quite a long time.

Now once he has already learned how to do the horse stance, the next stance that he will be doing is the bow rider stance which is a lunge. After that, he will do a cat stance wherein his back leg will carry majority of the weight. From there, he will practice shifting from one stance to another.

After one has already learned the basic stances, he will be putting them all together in order to do the basic tai chi forms. While doing forms, one will already be incorporating some hand movements as well while shifting stances. The instructor will be the one to teach the students how to do the forms.
